But it’s not just the humor and emotion that makes Gintama so engaging, when it gets down to it, the series can deliver top-notch action that audiences look for in a shonen series. With more than its fair share of moments that tug at the heartstrings, Gintama is a series that isn’t afraid to make its viewers cry just as much as they laugh. The mesh of traits is carefully balanced, creating a character with a surprising amount of humanity. This became even more evident as the series progressed and his past came back to haunt him, in more ways than one. The more that we learned about Gintoki, the clearer it became that he was a divided soul a man split between his current and past selves. While Gintoki can go from cutting people down to cracking jokes in the same episode, these massive juxtapositions never contradict his nature.įrom early on in the plot, it was made clear that these conflicting personalities were two sides of the same coin. What makes him unique among shonen protagonists is his versatility and depth as a character. With moments that make for some of the funniest the show has to offer and characterization that’s some of shonen’s finest, Gintoki is, in many ways, the embodiment of his series as a whole. When discussing the cast, one needn’t look any further than its main character. But where the show truly comes into its own is when it focuses on its main characters. A prime example of this is Hedoro who, while only being a minor recurring character for the majority of the show, had his own moments of character exploration and relevance in the final arc of the anime. In this department, Gintama stands tall among the likes of One Piece, with even the smallest of side characters having the potential to return and contribute to the main plot. Like many shonen anime, Gintama boasts an enormous cast of characters but unlike most of its contemporaries, the series has always found a way to keep them relevant. The classic Shogun episodes, the Scandal arc and the hilarious battle of wits over toilet paper are just a few of many examples. Beyond the legendary parodies the series is known for, most notably those of other Shonen Jum p franchises like One Piece, Dragon Ball and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Gintama has an overwhelming amount of original humor that enables it to stand on its own. While it’s not the first shonen anime to employ humor - series like Dragon Ball had quite a bit of it in its earlier stages only to mostly abandon it later on - none have used it and maintained it to the same degree as Gintama. Quite possibly the series’ most well-known component, Gintama’s comedy is truly something special. Still, with the film's premiere less than half a year away, now is the perfect time to look back on the nearly 15-year-old series and what has contributed to its lasting appeal. But given Gintama’s history of trolling its fans, this should be taken with a pinch of salt. Set to release in Japan early 2021, the film, entitled Gintama The Final, claims to be the conclusion of the series.
